Choice of handle
The old doors are often equipped to handle button, joinery recent crutch handles. There are complete systems for replacement of the two sides or half-assemblies to only change a handful depending on the style of the room. Remove the existing handle
The older ones are kept on their metal rod (or square) by a pin on each side of the door . Using a flathead screwdriver, pry to lift and remove the pin. Remove all handles / square and remove the plates clean.Take your measurements
The new handle must have a rod the same diameter as the old . Also measure the latter, which can be 6, 7 or 8 mm. The distance between the handle and the keyhole is always 70 mm.If you want to install a door knob, raise the position of the axis from the edge of the door. Also make sure the button is the right size: too large, it would be difficult to handle and could even jam.
If the existing screw holes do not coincide or may be, chew them and possibly touch up paint.
Install the new handle
First place clean plates on each side of the door. In general, the screw holes do not match and we must make new ones. Prior to locate and drill, check the verticality of the plate with spirit level.Once the plates set, insert the square into the slot and slide over the first handful.Newer models are often held in lieu of pins, with hexagonal screws that are tightened with an Allen key. Adjust the length of the square before tightening the screw. Then open the door and attach the second handle on the end protruding from the square.
